HISTORY


Area of Zadar has been inhabitated since Prehistory. In 7th and 6th century B.C. Zadar`s port was very developed and it was used for trade ships. In the middle of 2nd century B.C. Romans occupied Zadar`s region. It was called Jadar. In 5th century Zadar got under the rule of Eastern Goths and it got poor in that time. In 4th till 6th century new religion expanded, Christianity. In 537. Zadar got under Byzantines. It was capital town of Dalmatia till 1918. Since 1105. Zadar was in battles with Venetia. It got under Croatian-Hungarian rule in 1358. That time was the golden time of Zadar. It was political and trade center. It was developing. In 1409. Zadar was sold to Venetia. In 16th and 17th century Zadar was under attack of Turks. After Venetia failed, Zadar was joined to Austria. Later French occupied Zadar, but in 1813. it got under Austrians again. Zadar was developing again. After 1921. Split became the center of Dalmatia. After World War II. Zadar was joined to Croatia.

LOCATION AND CLIMATE


Zadar (North Dalmatia, Croatia) is center of Zadar`s region. Near Zadar is highway Split-Zagreb. It is connected with Knin with railway and with Italian Ancona with ship connection. Zadar has airport in Zemunik, 14 km from Zadar. Zadar is consisted of 15 settlements: Babindub, Brgulje, Ist, Kozino, Mali Iz, Crno, Petrcane, Olib, Molat, Premuda, Silba, Veli Iz, Rava, Zapuntel, Zadar. Zadar is 5th town in Croatia by its area. It has around 80000 inhabitants. Zadar has Mediterranean climate with influence of Continental climate. Zadar has around 200 sunny days a year. Average temperature in July is around 25 C°. It is located in the most indented part of Adriatic archipelago. Near Zadar there are National Parks Plitvice, Kornati, Paklenica and Krka, Parks of Nature Velebit and Telascica.
